At Bedmond Academy, we encourage our pupils to develop as individuals. One of the ways we try to encourage this is the ‘Play Leading Scheme’. This promotes pupil well-being, social skills and teamwork. It also encourages the older pupils to organise games for their peers, especially the younger pupils. It promotes organisation, communication and responsibility skills and most importantly, they all have fun! They meet on a regular basis with our lunchtime staff to discuss new games and play equipment and questions that the children want to ask.

Our play leaders volunteer their time to support at play times to establish a happy playtime for all pupils. They have received training on how to deliver different games. As well as delivering traditional playground games, the children have lots of play equipment to enjoy, ranging from hula-hoops, skipping ropes, basketball, space hoppers, bowling and swing ball with more equipment on the way! Our play leaders also set up a range of quiet activities and art activities, such as painting, playdoh and loom bands.

Another of the aims of the scheme is that it will increase the amount of physical activity undertaken during playtime/lunchtime and reduce the number of behaviour issues on the playground. It is hoped there will be a whole school impact in terms of pupil behaviour both at lunchtime and in afternoon lessons.
